What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM card built into your phone. Just like a regular SIM card, it connects to a mobile provider, but you do not need to insert a plastic card into your phone. You download a digital SIM profile and use it to activate a mobile data plan.
An eSIM is especially handy when you travel abroad and are not sure what your own provider charges for mobile data. You can buy a separate data plan for Albania and simply leave your own SIM card in your phone.
That way you can, for example, keep using your home number for WhatsApp, text messages and phone calls, while the eSIM handles your mobile data. Which features are available depends on your own subscription and the eSIM plan you choose.
Summary: eSIM in Albania
Want to decide quickly? These are your options:
- Airalo: an international provider with data plans for Albania. Handy if you want to arrange your internet in advance. View the current plans.
- Vodafone Albania: a local provider with tourist packs and eSIM services. Check beforehand which combination of eSIM and plan is currently available. Visit the official website.
- One Albania: a local provider that supports eSIM for prepaid and postpaid lines. For a local eSIM you can visit a One shop. View the eSIM information.
- A physical prepaid SIM card: an alternative if your phone does not support eSIM or if you prefer help in a shop.
The best choice depends on how long you stay in Albania, how much data you use and whether you also need a local phone number.
What is roaming?
Roaming means that you use your mobile phone on a network in a country other than that of your own provider. Your Dutch or Belgian SIM card, for example, can connect to an Albanian mobile network so that you can make calls and use the internet there.
Within the EU, the Roam Like at Home rules generally apply. They allow you to use your plan in many other EU countries without extra roaming charges, within the terms of your subscription.
Albania, however, is currently not covered by the regular EU roaming scheme. In February 2026 the European Commission proposed starting negotiations to extend the scheme to Albania and other Western Balkan countries. That does not mean the scheme is already in force.
If you use your home SIM card in Albania (from the Netherlands, Belgium or anywhere else in the EU), extra costs may therefore apply. The exact rates differ per provider and plan. So check your own operator’s roaming rates before you leave.
A separate eSIM can be a solution. You buy a data plan designed for use in Albania, so you do not depend on the roaming rates of your own subscription.
The benefits of an eSIM
An eSIM has several advantages when you travel to Albania:
- You do not need a physical SIM card.
- You can buy your data plan online in advance.
- You do not have to look for a phone shop after you arrive.
- You can leave your own SIM card in your phone.
- You know in advance how much data you are buying and what the plan costs.
- You can often choose from different validity periods and data amounts.
- You can switch on the eSIM after arrival and use it for mobile data.
Especially on a road trip, it is great to have internet straight away. You can navigate, find your accommodation and look things up without first hunting for WiFi.
Do keep in mind that not every eSIM offers the same features. Many international travel eSIMs are for mobile data only. In that case you do not automatically get an Albanian phone number, and you cannot call or text directly with the eSIM as you would with a regular SIM card.
An eSIM in Albania
There are several ways to use an eSIM in Albania. You can buy an international travel eSIM in advance or ask a local provider about an eSIM with a prepaid plan.
1. An international eSIM
An international eSIM is especially useful if you want to arrange everything before you leave. You choose a data plan online, install the eSIM profile on your phone and use the plan as soon as you are in Albania and connect to a supported mobile network.
One example is Airalo. This provider sells eSIMs for Albania that use the One Albania network.
The available data plans differ in data allowance and validity. The website lists plans with a fixed amount of data as well as unlimited options. Some unlimited plans come with conditions, such as a speed reduction after a certain amount of data use.
So always check the current terms before you buy a plan.

2. An eSIM from a local provider
Would you rather use a local telecom provider? In Albania, Vodafone Albania and One Albania are the two main providers to consider.
Vodafone Albania
Vodafone offers tourist packs with lots of mobile data and national call minutes. In July 2026, for example, the provider introduced Tourist Tera Pack 1, 2 and 3:
- Tourist Tera Pack 1: 1,000 GB for 15 days, with 1,000 national call minutes, for 2,700 ALL.
- Tourist Tera Pack 2: 1,100 GB for 21 days, with 1,000 national call minutes, for 2,900 ALL.
- Tourist Tera Pack 3: 1,200 GB for 30 days, with 1,000 national call minutes, for 3,300 ALL.
The third pack also lists 3 GB of roaming data in Greece and a roaming limit of 20 GB for the Western Balkans.
Please note: these are published prices for tourist packs, not automatically the prices of eSIM-only data plans. In May 2026 Vodafone announced separate tourist packs that were to be activated with an eSIM via its website, but later withdrew that offer. So do not assume those specific web packs are available.
Check the current offers on the official Vodafone Albania website.
One Albania
One Albania also supports eSIM. According to the official information, you can activate a new prepaid or postpaid number in a One shop and receive the QR code for your eSIM there.
That is an interesting option if you want not just internet but also a local line. Ask in the shop which prepaid plans are currently available and whether you can use your chosen plan with an eSIM.
You can find more information on the official One Albania eSIM page.
Keep in mind that local prepaid rates and international travel eSIMs cannot be compared one-to-one. A local plan can include lots of data and call minutes, while an international eSIM is simply easy to install in advance.
Step-by-step: how to set up an eSIM for Albania
Want mobile internet as soon as you arrive in Albania? Then follow these steps.
Step 1: Check whether your phone supports eSIM
Not every phone can use an eSIM. Many recent iPhones, Samsung Galaxy devices and Google Pixel phones support the technology, but this differs per model and version.
Also check whether your phone is SIM-unlocked. A device tied to a single provider may not be able to use an eSIM from another provider.
Step 2: Choose a suitable data plan
Think about roughly how much data you need and how long you will stay in Albania.
Do you mainly use Google Maps, WhatsApp, email and online banking? Then a small data plan may be enough. Do you want to share lots of photos and videos, stream music or work on the go? Then choose a bigger plan.
Also check that the validity period matches your trip. A seven-day plan, for example, is not enough if you stay three weeks, unless you can top up or buy a new plan.
Step 3: Buy your eSIM online or from a local provider
With an international provider you can usually pay via the website or app. You then receive instructions to install the eSIM.
For a local eSIM from One Albania you can go to a shop. To register a local line, bring your passport or another accepted ID. Ask beforehand which documents are required.
Step 4: Install the eSIM
You usually install the eSIM by scanning a QR code or by following the instructions in the provider’s app.
On an iPhone you can usually find the installation under Settings → Mobile Service (or Cellular) → Add eSIM.
On an Android phone you will usually find the option under Settings → Network & internet or Connections → SIMs/SIM manager → Add eSIM. The exact names differ per brand and software version.
Make sure you have a stable internet connection during installation. Keep the installation details and do not simply delete the eSIM profile: some providers do not allow you to easily reinstall the same eSIM.
Step 5: Activate the eSIM when you arrive in Albania
Switch on your eSIM line as soon as you want to use the plan. Set it as the line for mobile data and enable data roaming if the provider requires it.
Leave your regular SIM card switched on if you want to stay reachable on your own number. Do check which SIM card your phone uses for mobile data, so you do not accidentally roam on your own subscription.
If everything is set up correctly, you can use mobile data as soon as the eSIM connects to a supported network.
An eSIM alternative: a physical prepaid SIM card
Is your phone not eSIM-compatible, or would you rather buy a local line in a shop? Then you can also buy a regular prepaid SIM card in Albania.
Vodafone Albania and One Albania have shops in the larger cities and sell tourist packs. You will also find points of sale at Tirana airport, but check on arrival which shops are open.
When buying a local prepaid SIM card, you need to allow for ID registration. So bring your passport and keep the address of your accommodation handy in case the salesperson asks for it.
The advantage of a physical SIM card is that you can often get help with activation and settings right away. The downside is that you have to swap cards or need a second SIM slot, depending on your phone.
If you want to keep using your own number, first check whether your device supports dual SIM. Many modern phones can use a physical SIM card and an eSIM at the same time.
WiFi and staying safe online in Albania
In hotels, restaurants and cafés in Albania you can regularly use WiFi. That is handy for downloading large files, watching videos or uploading your photos without using mobile data.
Still, WiFi is not always a practical solution when you are on the move. On a drive along the Albanian Riviera, a walk through a city or a trek in the mountains, you often want direct access to maps and travel information.
An eSIM gives you more freedom. You do not depend on a WiFi network and can stay online on the road as long as you have mobile coverage.
Do keep in mind that coverage in remote areas can be less reliable. In the Albanian Alps and other mountainous areas there may be places where you get little or no mobile signal. So download important maps in advance and save reservations, addresses and other travel information offline.
Are you using public WiFi? Then pay attention to security. Avoid sensitive actions on networks you do not trust and use a reliable VPN where necessary. A VPN can encrypt your internet traffic, but it does not automatically make an unsafe network completely risk-free.
